Tropical Tutorial with Whirlwind Baked Shadow!

When I look at our gorgeous Whirlwind Baked Shadow, it reminds me of what it looks like when you fly over a Caribbean ocean or a tropical island. The Whirlwind palette has the bronze colors of the beach and the blue colors of the ocean! So I decided to do a very long overdue tutorial using the beautiful tropical colors of our baked shadows!

And then after I was done filming the tutorial, I noticed that they used very similar colors on the cover of Makeup Artist magazine! It is a very involved, vibrant, Avante Garde look that the everyday woman may not want to go to the supermarket in, so this is the perfect example of how to take an extreme look and tone it down so you can use it in everyday life. From the runway to the real world!

A Crash Course in Makeup Application-My 100th Post!

One of my favorite, relaxing times of the day is when I am applying my makeup. It is usually quiet and provides me a few minutes to relax and think. I never understood how women can apply their makeup while on the bus or the train. Never mind that it is a moving vehicle, it is a bit personal to have strangers around you while you are "applying your face". Something I can never wrap my head around is when I see a woman applying their makeup while driving in their car. Usually mascara. Really? You can't take an extra 10 minutes to do this in the privacy of your own home? Do you really feel it is safe to a.) operate a 2000 pound piece of machinery while focusing on your eyes/lips and not on the road? and b.) aim for your eye with a sharp pencil or mascara wand while in a moving vehicle?! Don't even get me started on men who shave while in the car!

Today I had read that a recent study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found touching up your lipstick (or any other makeup) can increase a driver's crash risk by three times whereas talking on the phone upped the risk by just 1.3 times.

Something to think about! You always hear about texting and driving but how many campaigns have there been about makeup and driving?

 None until now!

Those crafty Germans at Volkswagen have tapped into the YouTube Makeup Guru trend and enlisted popular YouTuber, Nikkie (who I am now subscribed to), to help make a very powerful statement. Watch the video below, it is only a little over a minute long and tell me what you think.

How Young is too Young for Botox?

 I think it's safe to say that over the past 10 years, Botox has become, hands down, the top requested non-surgical procedure performed in the USA. For those of you who do not know how Botox works, basically Botox blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. The injected muscle can no longer contract, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. Botox is often used on the forehead, in between the brows, as well as around the eyes. Botox is also used for a plethora of other things such as to stop excessive underarm sweating and eye twitches. Getting Botox injections are a non-invasive procedure that is performed in your doctors office, it will last about 4-6 months before you will need to revisit your doctor for more injections. Botox will run you about $500-$750 depending on the area being treated and how may units they have to use. And did I mention that it SMOOTHS WRINKLES?! Now you can also go overboard and start to look like you are "Botoxed" which can have the effect of a frozen look. Think of recent photos of Madonna or Kylie Minogue.

Now I have never gotten Botox injections, however I definitely see the appeal of a little tasteful tweak and am not opposed to maybe one day giving it a whirl. What I find interesting is there are more and more reports of women as young as their early twenties starting to get Botox! Why?? What could it possibly do to a lineless 20 year old? CBS News reported that while preparing for a role in an upcoming episode of "Glee," 18-year-old pop star Charice Pempengco had Botox injections to look "fresh on camera." Because you know how wilted those 18 year olds can look.

Some people believe the younger you start, the more preventive it is. The theory behind that is because you are 'paralyzing" the muscles and they cannot move, new wrinkles will not form. One study confirms the prevention angle. Researchers followed sets of identical twins over a 13-year period. Starting at age 25, one twin received Botox two to three times a year; her sister went without the treatment. The twin who received the treatments was found to have less visible crow's feet, and no visible lines on the forehead or between the eyebrows (Binder W. Long-term effects of Botulinum toxin type A (Botox) on facial lines: a comparison in identical twins. Arch Facial Plast Surg. 2006;8(6):426-431).

Botox DOES NOT work on wrinkles caused by sun damage (wear your sun protection people!).

Eyebrow Tips!

I was watching Bethenny the other day and she had on Anastasia, the very famous eyebrow guru. She did an eyebrow makeover on 2 young ladies. I always say the eyebrows are the picture frames to your face and when Anastasia was done, these two ladies looked like they had new frames and new faces!

Just a few eyebrow tips for everyone: 

1-Start-If you place a pencil along the side of your nose starting at the middle of your nostril-this is where your eyebrow should start. In this photo, it looks like my eyebrow should start a little closer to the bridge of my nose. If you have a very thin bridge, please use your judgement-you don't want your eyebrows to meet.
 *Tip-Right eye, right nostril. Left eye, left nostril.  

2-Arch-If you place a pencil from the tip of your nose, in line with your pupil-this is where your arch should be.


3-End-If you place a pencil from the side of your nose, angled over your cheek-this is where your eyebrow should end.

She also used a stencil, which I have never used and it looked very natural and groomed. How many of you use a stencil? Is it easy?

Re-Post: I LOVE OLIVE OIL!

This is a re-post of one of the very first things I've ever posted! I thought you all could enjoy it all over again!

I LOVE Olive Oil!

I love cooking with it and dipping my bread in it... but I really love olive oil as a beauty product!

I use olive oil for everything and you can too! I like to use Extra Virgin Olive Oil, as it is natural, pure, chock full of antioxidants, and there are no additives or preservatives.

Here are some ways you can use Olive Oil:

As a Moisturizer: Don't worry, you won't smell like a salad... In the morning, I take 2 drops of olive oil and massage it into my skin before I put on my sunblock (wait a minute for the olive oil to sink in). It keeps my skin supple and conditioned all day long(especially in the wintertime) and it also helps my mineral based sunblock go on very smoothly. Keep in mind that oil and water do not mix, so if you are using a water based product such as foundation over olive oil, there is a chance that it will cause the product to move around on your skin. Some people may want to add olive oil to their night time routine instead. Olive oil, along with some other non-fragrant oils such as jojoba oil; mimic the lipids found in the skin.

As Eye Makeup Remover: At night, I rub a couple of drops onto my eyelids to loosen the makeup, then I just rinse with my regular face wash.

As a Face & Body Scrub: I mix olive oil and sugar together to make a face scrub which I use about once a week. Just make a bigger batch and use it in the shower as a body scrub.

To Clean Makeup Brushes: I put olive oil on a paper towel and rub the brushes around it until all the makeup comes off. The olive oil gets the dirt out and conditions the bristles. Then I wash them with shampoo.

As I said before... I love olive oil and for many different reasons. Remember, Sophia Loren was quoted as crediting spaghetti for her sexy looks(which she has denied saying) but I think it was the olive oil.

Time for some Sun Protection!

Hey Guys! It is that time of year again when the days get longer and everyone starts spending more time outside. More time outside means more sun exposure so you need to start protecting yourself! This is a post I will re-post every single year at this time to remind everyone why it is so important to protect their skin from the sun!

Apparently there are some of you who think that SPF 4 is adequate protection while you are laying in the sunshine for hours. You know who you are because I am speaking directly to you.

 It is that time of the year again. Summertime is fast upon us, so it is my duty to make sure everyone knows the importance of sun protection. The sun makes your skin look dry, dull, uneven, wrinkled, and causes the collagen to break down, which causes skin to sag. Also, you don't even see the damage it causes until years later, which is why it is so important to use broad spectrum sun protection all the time, including wintertime and during daily activities. Besides causing premature aging, you can get skin cancer from the sun-so please protect yourself.

So what is the best protection for you? Well let me explain the difference between sunscreen and sunblock. Sunscreen or chemical sunscreen use chemicals as the active sun protection ingredients. It usually contains oxybenzone or avobenzone (also known as Parsol 1789), which can cause irritation if you have sensitive skin. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays before they can cause any damage. Chemical sunscreens need to be applied about 30 minutes before sun exposure as that is how long it takes to "activate" on your skin.

Sunblock or physical sunblock use minerals such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide as the active sun protection ingredients. Physical sunblock is much more gentle on sensitive skin and they work by forming an opaque film that reflects or scatters UV light before it can penetrate the skin. Physical sunblock sometimes has a whitish cast when applied to the skin (think of the lifeguard's white nose-that's zinc oxide).

I had done a whole post on antioxidants, they have been proven to increase sun protection so make sure you get your daily dosage of antioxidants through your diet or apply it to your skin before you apply your sunscreen, such as with the green tea toner, or a Vitamin C serum (I am going to do a post on how to make your own).

Yes it is true, almost everyone looks better with a tan, but there are much healthier ways of getting that tan than sitting in the sun or a tanning bed such as using a self tanner, going to get a spray tan, or using Little Goddess Mineral Bronzer in Congo! Also keep in mind that when your skin tans, it is actually protecting itself from the rays that are damaging it.

**TIP**When applying bronzer to your face, remember to hit your neck, chest, and even the tops of your hands so everything matches and looks uniform, and your face doesn't look like it's a different color from your body.

IMATS Beauty Booty!

Yesterday I told you all about IMATS, now lets get to the good stuff!

One of the great things about going to these trade shows is most of the products are on sale at discounted prices, sometimes as much as 60-70% off! So it really is a great opportunity to stock up on what you need and to try what you want!

Let me show you what beauty booty I bought!

First, my biggest score is this fabulous set bag from Naime's! The company that makes this bag is called On-D-Go and it was a steal. First, it is HUGE! Second, I have seen these clear set bags at other stores and this size will run you about $120! Not this bag! This bag was a very reasonable $25!!! The gentleman at the Naime's booth said their sale prices and their store prices were the same, so if you are interested in purchasing quality bags and makeup cases for a very reasonable price, you should definitely give Naime's a try. (I have not checked their website, so don't come yelling at me if the prices are not the same!)

Second, these look so luxurious, I am almost delirious about them and cannot wait to wear them! Beautiful Mink eyelashes from Velour Lashes! They are 100% Mink and can be used up to 25 times! They looked gorgeous on the little ladies that sold them to me and the packaging is adorable! There is even a warning that wearing them may cause serious side effects such as increased flirtiness, extreme sexiness, and irresistible eyes. And I seriously believe it!

Next is this very versatile foundation palette from RCMA, which I purchased from the Alcone counter. I have never used RCMA foundations (this was recommended to me by my friend, Ro Puchal, a very talented makeup artist who you will be reading about in a later post!) but I am really excited to try them!

I picked up some Beauty So Clean while I was at the Alcone counter to make sure everything stays sanitized! Everyone should pick up some of this product sanitizer, I spray it on everything!

Also from Alcone, my adorable Z Palettes! This cute Zebra one that is now housing all of my (most of my) Little Goddess eyeshadows and a snazzy little leopard print one as well!

 I love my animal prints!

Lastly, I bought a crease/blending brush from a company called bdellium tools. The girl at the check in counter recommended them and this one is fast becoming a favorite! Again, a steal at $6.00! NYX had a fabulously colorful counter with every product and color imaginable and they were nice enough to give away these little pigments at the door. Thanks NYX! Is it just me or does it seem that this company has exploded overnight?

 This past weekend was the IMATS show in NYC and for those of you who are not familiar with IMATS(International Makeup Artist Trade Show), it is one of the biggest makeup shows in the industry geared specifically towards the professional makeup artist.

So let's for a second discuss the business of beauty. There are 2 parts of the beauty industry that I am familiar with. One is the everyday consumer which are all of you beautiful Goddess' that LOVE makeup like I do and want to own the latest colors or formulations to your favorite products and brands. Just like I love writing about my favorite Little Goddess Cosmetics, most beauty bloggers like writing about their must have products and where you can buy them too! (Probably in a MAC store because they seem to be the fan favorite. Yawn.)

Mercury in lotions and potions!

Lead in lipstick, preservatives, phthalates!

Who knew being beautiful can be so dangerous!

The newest concern to hit the cosmetics/beauty world is the FDA has found lotions and potions tainted with mercury!

These products are made overseas and sold in the United States.

According to CNN's blog:

The Food and Drug Administration is cautioning consumers that skin creams, beauty and antiseptic soaps and lotions contaminated with mercury have been found in at least 7 states.

The products are made abroad and sold in the United States as skin lighteners and anti-aging creams. According to Gary Coody, national health fraud coordinator in the FDA's Office of Regulatory Affairs, some of the products are being sold online as well as in Latino, African, Asian or Middle Eastern neighborhoods. They are touted as products that can remove age spots, freckles, wrinkles and other blemishes. Some may be used by teenagers for acne.
"If you have a product that matches these descriptions, stop using it immediately" Coody said.

"Even though these products are promoted as cosmetics, they also may be unapproved new drugs under the law," said Dr. Linda Katz, director FDA's Office of Cosmetics and Colors. "FDA does not allow mercury in drugs or in cosmetics, except under very specific conditions, which these products do not meet."

Mercury is highly toxic and exposure at high levels can cause damage to the brain and kidneys according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

"Exposure to mercury can have serious health consequences," says Dr, Charles Lee, a senior medical advisor at the FDA. "It can damage the kidneys and the nervous system, and interfere with the development of the brain in unborn children and very young children."

Even short-term exposure, the CDC says, can cause lung damage, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, increases in blood pressure or heart rate, skin rashes, and eye irritation.

So far Texas, California, Virginia, Maryland, Minnesota, Illinois and New York have all reported cases of elevated mercury levels in skin care products. The Agency says consumers should check product labels for mercurous chloride, calomel. mercuric, mercurio or mercury. If those ingredients appear on the label, stop use immediately. Federal law requires ingredients be listed on all drugs or cosmetics. If there is no label or list of ingredients, or if the label is not in English, do not use the product.

According to the CDC's Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, signs of mercury poisoning include irritability, tremors, memory problems, vision or hearing impairment, depression and numbness and tingling around the mouth or in the hands and feet.

The FDA is asking anyone who suspects a product they have been using is contaminated stop using it immediately and contact a doctor.

So start reading the ingredients, research whatever is not familiar and steer clear of anything you feel would be harmful to you!

Am I Ugly?

Type those words into the YouTube search engine and see what pops up.

There is a trend happening on YouTube right now that is quite disturbing. Young girls are posting videos of themselves asking the viewers this simple question:

"Am I Pretty?"

The viewers can then post their answers in the comments section under the video.

Now let me give you some insight into what goes on on YouTube. As one of the hundreds of thousands of YouTube Makeup Gurus (YouTube's name, not mine), I can only speak from my own experience SO this is how it goes:

You work very hard to create a video that you think people are going to want to watch. Sometimes you have to film the video multiple times and then there is the couple of hours of edit time until finally you load your finished product that you put your blood, sweat and precious time into up to YouTube just to have some jacka$$ tell you

how much you suck.

Now for the most part, I have received mostly positive, friendly, kind feedback and I do believe that people are generally good but every now and then you come across the occasional troll that really feels the need to be negative and hurtful.

(For the record, I will never give some negative troll a platform for hate in my house.)

As an adult it can be hurtful and a little off putting. It can also be puzzling why anybody would want to intentionally be hurtful to another person but there are people who go on YouTube to do just that-to be mean and hateful. So it is really bothersome to think that young, insecure girls are exposing themselves willingly to such scrutiny and criticism. Some of these girls are just 10 years old!

Ummm, Hello YouTube-13 year old age limit? What happened to it? and Where are the parents? Why does your 10 year old have a web cam in their bedroom?!

I would love to tell each and every one of them how beautiful they are and how

 OTHER PEOPLE'S OPINIONS JUST DON'T MATTER!

I was happy to see that people are submitting videos responding to this trend and urging these young girls to please not post these videos and not worry about some insecure stranger's opinion.

I am sooooo happy there was no Internet when I was growing up because Lord knows what stupid things I would have done with it!!!

What is a BB Cream?

Every couple of years a new product comes along that no one has ever heard of and then BAM! All of a sudden it is everywhere!

Mineral foundations, Primers, "Natural" products, Lip Plumping glosses. One day no one is carrying them and then the next everyone is stocking them on their shelves. 

The latest product that is going to hit the cosmetics industry by storm is BB Creams.

So what is a BB Cream?

BB originally stood for Blemish Balm but I have recently heard it described as a Beauty Balm as well. They originated in South Korea, spread to Japan, then to South East Asia and now they are popping up in the good ole' USA! 

BB Creams were originally formulated for people who just had laser treatments and the BB Cream helped heel the skin while providing light coverage for scars and discoloration. Now they seem to be targeted towards people who have acne prone or sensitive skin.

BB Creams are intended to make your skin look perfect, provide coverage and have healing properties. They are a foundation, primer, concealer, moisturizer, sunblock and treatment cream all in one! Depending on which brand you choose, they come in varying degrees of coverage, protection or nourishment. The one complaint I have heard is because it is not technically a foundation, they usually only come in 1 or 2 shades, however now that the bigger cosmetics companies have picked up on the trend, I am sure there will be plenty of shades to pick from!

Does this all in one product sound too good to be true or does it sound like a bunch of hype? Do you think they will take off like a wild fire or will they be forgotten by next year?

You get the picture-there is a lot of inspiration in the world be it nature, art, food, fabric, music, to be stuck wearing the same old boring makeup looks!

I remember when I was a little girl and my mother would take me to upstate NY. 

We would go hiking in the mountains and my favorite thing to do when we were resting near a stream was to collect as many rocks as I can. When the rocks are wet, you can rub them together and all the natural minerals would come out and make this pasty makeup palette of gorgeous blues and oranges!

I may have created the first mineral makeup without even knowing it!

One of my most favorite things in the world to look at are peacocks. I can go to the Bronx Zoo and spend HOURS looking at the peacocks. So this week, I wanted to do a tutorial for you, inspired by the colors you would find in a peacock's feathers! You would find dark blues, greens, golds, browns and turquoise!

So here is a rundown of all the products that I used:

• Vanilla, Indigo, Jade, Sandstone, Gold Minx, Sand and Turquoise eyeshadows
• Wild Pink and Champagne Peach creme blushes.
• HD Mascara in Carbon
• Brow Shaper Kit in Light
• Nude Lipliner and Sangria Liptoxyl

and what I used off camera that you didn't get to see:

Mineral Sheer Tint in Light, HD Phototouch Concealer and Mineral Bronzer in Congo.
